greetings to all,

I am currently in eugene and looking to move to a new place in the spring. bellingham has been suggested to me by friends, and i would like to hear from people that live there, what the locals think of bellingham as a place to live .. what's good about it, and, what's not so good ..

i am a flat water kayaker, back packer, hiker, mellow fellow, nice addition to a neighborhood, damn good residential carpenter for framing-finish-remodel-repair, single, Sun magazine subscriber, progressive, moderate, liberal, card carrying member of the ACLU, tennis player, functionally illiterate meal cook, pretty good sandwich maker, REALLY good popcorn popper-oil only-butter optional-no air pop(why bother), BEST cornbread maker I know, AND, I drive a 93 Saab 900S (non turbo).

attended my first Burning Man event in Portland, hoping to get my ass to the desert for the main event in 2005.

so anyway, would like to hear from any bellinghammers willing to tell me what they think of bellingham as a place to live.

danke bueno y que donde,
- bryan

  • Your post was aeons ago, but I'll bite anyway. Many people come to Bellingham, believing that they can slip across the border when martial law is declared. That's a nice fantasy, but it won't happen. The borders being open, I mean. They will close down inexorably, instantly. The environment is lovely, especially if you're a druid. You may imagine this to be a cool place, a veritable college town, until you look around. I mean, really look around. Then you'll discover that many of the students are freshman from Eastern WA., and that they bring with them certain born-again values, along with a not so hip political ethos. We have demonstrations every week in front of the Federal Bldg. These our our home grown Trotskyites, who don't really care about strategic niceties such as planning or making any real impact. Many of them are narcissists, more intent on adolescent rebellion than making a difference. We're not talking a lot of people here, a handful (literally) in all. You don't come to Bellingham for Sun magazine; the consciousness movement is here, but it is still pretty primitive, sorta like it is in Kansas. Our municipal totem is not the wolf or the cougar, not the jaguar or the anaconda. We call ourselves hamsters. That's pretty appropriate, all in all. Elsewhere I described hamsters as furry, cute and stupid. Passive too. But hey, we're mellow. Clinically depressed, but yeah, we're somewhat mellow. You might carve out a life here if you want to flee the big city. After more than two years here, I have no illusions. There are certain trade offs. . . .
