One of my friends bailed, so I find myself with an extra pass into Skalitude Burner heaven!
I'm not looking to make any money from the deal...just what I paid for it.
And who knows... maybe a back rub? Ok just a peck on the cheek. What! Do I smell or somethin'!?
Well anywho, I'm motivated to find this ticket a good home.
Even if you're a prude and just want to keep things professional.

Hello Bellingham. I am travelling filmmaker bringing my new film, "THE INVISIBLE FOREST" (2008; 111 min. USA), to the PICKFORD CINEMA (1416 Cornwall) in Bellingham on WEDNESDAY JUNE 18, 8:30pm. I will also be there for post-screening Q&A.

"THE INVISIBLE FOREST" is an experimental feature inspired by the radical theatrical ideas of French Surrealist playwright Antonin Artaud about a group of actors that are working out their art in the forest when their director becomes haunted by dreams where the ghost of Artaud appears and teaches him a thing or two about real theatre. if you can attend, please feel free introduce yourself from tribe; thanks! I hope to see you there. - sherpa (Antero Alli)

Salon Stories - Just Say No to Eva Salon.

I went to the Eva Salon today as they were one of the few places open. Although my hair came out okay, I'm very frustrated over the way their staff (other than the woman working on my hair treated us as CUSTOMERS. I am looking to find if there is anyone else who has been there who may have also been treated VERY UNPROFESSIONALLY, not to mention having to change Station Three Times w/one being a direct attack from Alise who appeared to have arrived late to inform (in not so kind of a manner and right in front of me) the ONLY NICE ONE THERE(THE NICE ONE'S NAME WAS INGRID - SHE WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND VERY NICE AND I REALLY HOPE SHE MOVES TO A DIFFERENT SALON BEFORE I COME BACK TO BELLINGHAM) that she was in "HER STATION." My daughter mentioned how rude we thought that of her and then she got into it with my daughter, REMEMBER WE WERE THE CUSTOMERS THERE and told her "she didn't need her attitude so she could get out" when my daughter had a approached her in a very peaceful and civil manner when she just said "you have a hair on your nose," and continued to YELL BLATLANTLY at the same time. As my hair was already being processed (and that didn't come out as I had requested either and ended up costing a small fortune) I couldn't actually get up and walk out or I DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE. As it is, fortunately they didn't get to my daughter at the appointment time requested so she simply DIDN'T CONTRIBUTE ANY MORE $ to this very rude and unprofessional establishment. I just thought I would both seek advice and place a fair warning - last time I visited my daughter here in Bellingham, we went to the Cat & Fiddle in Fairhaven and they did a TERRIFIC JOB, it didn't appear they were open or we would have definitely made that choice but I fly out tomorrow so wanted to get it done today....fortunately the day now seems to have turned around for us both.

Hope all made it through the ice/snow of the last few days here - it's been great seeing snow, my it falls fast and melts fast here - alas, memories of Texas Winters growing up to say the least... & Beautiful - man the snow is beautiful 4 sure.

Thanks for your comments/recommendations on other salons, etc.

The BuriFuntson Mumford Law firm says that I was "misinformed" about the Argyle having lice. But I still wonder why my friend is out so much money and will never go back there. plus she told me she ran into the owner and she turned bright red and wouldn't talk to her. But that's just what she told me. I would never tell people this if I didn't believe it, but I guess I was "misinformed."

SO I guess so I don't get sued, I WAS MISINFORMED. :)

tuning into crystals

hi, i am hosting a crystal healing workshop at wise awakening's on saturday april 12 at 11:00........hope to see some of my tribe family in person! here are more of the details. the bellingham gem show is on the same day at blodell community center by lake whatcom, and we plan on doing a field trip together after the workshop to check out what the local dealers have to offer.

Join us for an afternoon of learning techniques for tuning into crystals. Crystals contain a spirit, and they crave love and interaction just like us. There will be many crystals on hand for use, or you may bring a crystal that you would like to begin working with. In the workshop, we will be covering many examples of ways to open up the telepathic connection between the crystals and yourself. Crystals trigger self healing and assist us in getting to the emotional root causes of imbalances in our bodies. Concluding the workshop, will be an opportunity to ask specific questions.

$10 entrance fee includes $10 off your first crystal reading or session with Kristine. Saturday April 12th, 11:00 am.

Kristine Pomeroy is owner of Owl House Crystal Solutions. Kristine is a pioneer in her field, and has developed a fine line of gem tinctures. She uses a combination of gem layouts, energy work on the aura, and pendulum diagnostics to assist clients in opening up blocked energy in their chakras and bodies. Kristine has a BFA, and has studied with world renowned crystal healers such as Naisha Ahsian, Robert Simmons, and Melody. The master teacher being the spirit of a record keeper crystal, where ancient healing techniques of working on the aura were revealed.

For more information please contact Kristine at...

Hi everyone,
My girlfriend (that's Jackie--she's a Tribe friend of mine too) moved to town a couple of weeks ago and we're wanting to meet folks to cavort with. She went to Western several years back but i'm one of those Californians that i hear are invading your state. Actually i wasn't that keen to leave CA but we had some family emergency issues and so here i find myself, settling into the uncertainty of a new place but really enjoying all the trees and fresh air up here and hoping to find some others to enjoy with. Not picky--would just love people to talk with and hang out. Like to party mellowly, hiking, hot springs, earthy people...let me know...LOL (that means Lots of Love in my book) Autumn

Hi there tribenetters. I was hoping to find a kind, nurturing individual to help me learn the art of fire poi. I have my own set of practice balls and have played around a little but have yet to find the motivation to devote the time to learn and practice. I am willing to pay for a couple half hour lessons a week with cash, home-cooked meals, artwork, microbrews, unique wine or whatever else you'll except. I truly desire to commit myself to poi so I'm hoping you would be willing to help. Thank you!

My brother and I are working our Arses off on a 43 foot kettenburg wooden sailboat on a farm at the foot of mt baker. We'd love to find some people who would enjoy helping out with this beautiful boat in exchange for lots and lots of sailing around the San Juans this summer. We're looking for anyone who can bring more inspiration and creativity, any skills you have will be useful!! Either way this is a very chill place to hang out and build a wooden boat. She's a classic racer/cruiser....long overhangs, narrow, and sexy as..... I'm working 12 hour days on her and plan to learn to sail around the san juans this summer, then start crossing oceans :-).

Over the last few months, we've installed about 50 new frames, and are now in the process of putting in an unbelievable cabin and cockpit (complete with zebra wood, ebony, redwood burls, stained glass, and a HOT TUB!!!)

Just call Captain Morgan (i don't use e-mail much) at (646)644-1978

Not Just Anyone Can Live In This Place

I wrote this quite a spell ago and published it in a local paper.

Not Just Anyone Can Live In This Place
by Kamalla Rose Kaur

"Not just anyone can live in this place." I was told repeatedly down through the years by my grandparents, parents and many regional teachers. I was raised understanding that the Pacific Northwest in general and Bellingham in particular are not suitable dwelling places for those of us who can't handle being deeply alone with our own thoughts and feelings. From the vantage point of New York City, Washington State is a wilderness and only Seattle is a big enough dot to show up on a New Yorker's mental map of the universe. This is good. I was taught young to take pride in Bellingham's vast isolation from the power centers of the USA. Traditionally Bellingham is the home of hermits and sourdoughs, lumbermen and fishermen, artists and intellectuals and other various escapees from USA "civilization". In my teens, we became a haven for hippies and social justice activists as well.

Unfortunately Bellingham is quickly getting more and more on the map, and as it does it is becoming more and more like everywhere else in the USA. Nowadays, when it is sunny in the North end of Bellingham, I can forget completely that I am not in California. It looks and feels just like California; same condos, same businesses, same street, called "Cordato".

Still I hold faith in this place. This isn't California, nor is the Pacific Northwest going to be as easily conquered by developers and profiteers. Nature is still big and powerful here and not just anyone, or anything, can live in this place. California style buildings, businesses, promotions, lifestyles and denial decay quickly here during our dark months. Constant wetness, molds and fungii, attack our buildings, our bodies and our moods. You can try to distract yourself from the reality that the cloud ceiling is pressing down and the walls of constant drizzle are sqeezing your soul in; you can go out on the town somewhere and drink, you can party with friends and drink, or you can hang at home with friends and family, and drink - or why not just stay home by yourself and drink? Down through my life I have witnessed that Pacific Northwest dark months brew many drunks.

Of course there are the movies, and museums, restaurants and coffee shops, and shopping; but during our nine or ten months of darkness you will likely begin to feel lonely even when surrounded by family and friends. Your world, like the weather may well close in on you until you have no one, and nothing, to really be with, except yourself - and you may have to face the fact that you are lousy company. The Pacific Northwest is depressing. Many people commit suicide here.

So maybe you buy a sunlamp, or if you have the money maybe you escape to California or Hawaii for a couple months each winter so you don't have to really experience being a Pacific Northwesterner. And when you return, so does your fungal infection and your mold and fungus allergies and soon you awaken to the fact that your oversized beige or grey modern house looks depressingly like everyone elses, and it was made on the cheap and it is rotting exceedingly fast. Best to cut your losses and go back where you belong.

Not just anyone can live in this place of long mysterious misty night.

Then suddenly the skies clear, the mountains and islands appear, and we are hit by the Shagra-La-La effect. We boat, swim, ski, hike!

Then the night returns and grey rains pour and the winds howl.

True Pacific Northwesterners often complain about the sun. We mutter about "global warming" and fear that Bellingham's climate is "improving". Pacific Northwesterns go to Larrabee State Park on rainy days. We prefer pebbly beaches and we never tire of standing alone on cliffs in the biting cold wet briny breeze, staring West out over the slate winter grey waters of Puget Sound. We hike and bike in the rain. We value solitude and we are stubbornly independent - we are friendly but we also tend to be loners. That is what I was taught, about my regional culture, about my people. Real old time Pacific Northwesterners have taught me, but more powerfully, the darkness has taught me, the years of rain have taught me, the mud and the slugs have taught me, and my happiness within my own solitude has taught me, the cosmic power of decay and rebirth in this land.

Not just anyone can live in this place. Here in the Pacific Northwest, nature is very big and we are, by nature, either humble or in the process of being humbled.

We're researching cost of living differences and such while contemplating a move to the Bellingham area in the next year. We currently live in Anchorage, AK which has a reputation of being a terribly expensive place to live, but in the last 10 years has really evened out with the Seattle and Portland vacinities.

We're currently studying housing. We'd rent initially, and hopefully buy when the new jobs are solid and we're positive we've moved to the right community to raise our child (to be born in Jan. 08).

Can you please help me to understand the neighborhoods and outlying communities of the area? We'd be looking to rent a 3 bedroom, hopefully 2 bath. Ideally we'd like some outdoor space as well. We aren't opposed to a moor urbanesque dwelling if there are park areas near by (which can't really be a problem in the area, can it?).

We're in our late 30's, an IT and New Media professional, respectively. We're eager for a change...

Any advice on neighborhoods to focus on for a small socially progressive family would be much appreciated!

greetings to all,

I am currently in eugene and looking to move to a new place in the spring. bellingham has been suggested to me by friends, and i would like to hear from people that live there, what the locals think of bellingham as a place to live .. what's good about it, and, what's not so good ..

i am a flat water kayaker, back packer, hiker, mellow fellow, nice addition to a neighborhood, damn good residential carpenter for framing-finish-remodel-repair, single, Sun magazine subscriber, progressive, moderate, liberal, card carrying member of the ACLU, tennis player, functionally illiterate meal cook, pretty good sandwich maker, REALLY good popcorn popper-oil only-butter optional-no air pop(why bother), BEST cornbread maker I know, AND, I drive a 93 Saab 900S (non turbo).
Month to Month apartments?

Sorry to be so unoriginal
as to ask questions
about moving to your fair city... but:

Are there any cheap 'flops'
a person can bunk at
while looking for a real residence?
Month to month ...furnished perhaps?
Etc.

I've noticed there are no hostels to stay at
while I'm looking for a roomate/apartment on craigslist
and
I would really hate to stay in a shelter
if I didn't absolutely need to.

A little background about me...
I'm a thirty year old male
non-drinker/smoker
moving from San Antonio, Texas.

Okay...
Thanks in advance
for any advice you can give!

by K.R.Kaur

"I like the guitar playing of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Vic Briggs". - Jimi Hendrix 1967

Eric Clapton amd Jeff Beck. we've heard of, but who is Vic Briggs?

Oh yeah, he was the lead guitar player and arranger for Eric Burdon and the New Animals; remember "San Francisco Nights", "Monterey", and "Sky Pilot"?

"Vic Briggs was the most musically adept musician ever to pass through the ranks of the Animals in either of that group's major incarnations. His association with Eric Burdon & the Animals (sometimes called "the New Animals") made him a key player in British psychedelia, his skills as a guitarist and arranger evident on most of that group's hits from 1966 through 1968. - Bruce Eder"

So what happened to him?

Vic Briggs fell in love with East Indian music and culture and changed his name, at the beginning of the 70s. He is Antion Vikram Singh now, a practicing Sikh, In 1979 he became the first non-Indian to ever play classical Gurbani Kirtan, the sacred music of the Sikh religion, at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar Indian, aka The Golden Temple.

"Classical Indian music takes years and years of study, but somehow I learned Gurbani Kirtan very quickly. So quite suddenly, there I was, this white guy, doing this totally 'Kick Ass Kirtan'! It seemed to disturb them somewhat. They didn't quite know what to make of me. One ragi, Sikh musician, I was close to told me that another ragi, very well known, said I was 'haaneekarak' (dangerous)."

Then in 1991 Antion was introduced to the music and culture of Hawaii. Surprised to find how much it stirred his soul, Antion began to listen to and learn to play Hawaiian music. This culminated in his moving to the island of Kauai in 1993. He was fortunate to study with an outstanding Kumu Hula (Hula Master), Blaine Kamalani Kia. Antion Vikram Singh has now become known and respected for his Oli (Hawaiian chanting) and has performed at leading Hula Festivals and competitions all over Hawaii.

"For many years, I have believed that my life purpose is two fold:

First to inspire and empower others spiritually with the sound of my voice.

Second, to help others to inspire and empower themselves with the sound of their own voices.

Recently, I have been inspired to add a third:

To bring through my music and presence a sense of aloha and healing to all I meet."

Growing an "Earth Community" mindset in Bellingham

David Korten Quotes:

"We humans devote much of our lives to a search for prosperity, security, and meaning. Whether at this defining moment we choose as our guide the prosperity, security, and meaning stories of Empire or those of Earth Community will in substantial measure determine whether future generations will know our time as the time of the Great Unraveling or the time of the Great Turning.”

“The Great Turning begins with relearning how to live, which depends in turn on new life-affirming stories. The life-affirming stories...that give voice to the deep human yearning for healthy children, families, communities, and natural environments."

“Supporting evidence for the possibilities of Earth Community comes from the findings of quantum physics, evolutionary biology, developmental psychology, anthropology, archaeology, and religious mysticism. It was the human way before Empire; we must make a choice to re-learn how to live by its principles.”

"Given that Empire has prevailed for 5,000 years, a turn from Empire to Earth Community might seem a hopeless fantasy if not for the evidence from values surveys that a global awakening to the higher levels of human consciousness is already underway.”

“The life-denying stories of Empire cannot compete with the life-affirming stories of Earth Community, which -- in combination with practical demonstrations -- give voice to the deep human yearning for healthy children, families, communities, and natural environments."

Sustainable Bellingham presents:
Best-selling author David C. Korten

on his new book "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community"

First Congregational Church

Tickets are $5 - available at Community Food Co-op, Village Books, and Whatcom Community College.

"Employing history, psychology, economics, spirituality, and common sense, Korten not only critiques the dilemma we are in as a species, he also shows us doable and workable ways out of our morass. He has created a tour de force -- a call to compassion as much as a blueprint for survival.”
- Matthew Fox, theologian and author of Original Blessing

"If you read only one book on how to address the looming ecological and social crises facing humanity, make it this one! ...he outlines a positive and realistic plan for actually creating a just and sustainable global society."
- David Cobb, 2004 Green Party United States Presidential Candidate

"...a masterpiece of big thinking to help us find our way in this death-or-life historical moment..."
- Frances Moore Lappe', author of Hope's Edge and Democracy's Edge

"Brilliant. Challenging. Inspiring. Practical. Spiritual. Intelligent..."
- The Very Reverend Bill Phipps, former Moderator, United Church of Canada

"a masterpiece! Fascinating, compelling, wonderfully readable, and broad reaching in its arc of history and significance."
—Thom Hartmann, author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight

bassnectar magic ticket for you! crazy!

hallo, lovelies,

i'm in a bit of a pinch. i bought meself a ticket to bassnectar, coming up this tuesday, thinking i'd be able to make it up from where i'm currently hermit-ing outside seattle. turns out that i don't think i can, though, which is sad indeed. however, this means i have a ticket for one of you lucky and delicious sailors, and it would thrill my heart and shiver my knickers if someone were to take it off my hands. i originally paid 11 or so dollars for it but it'd be silly to ask that much since they're only 8 at the door. 8 at the door! i know, i know, you could easily just go pay at the door, but it would be such a grand thing to, you know, buy it from me instead (also for 8 bucks)! also, if you do, i'll write you a poem. it can be on any subject you choose. or i'll take you out for coffee or a pint next time i'm up there. it's up to you! this is basically a magical, win-win situation.

so! if you want my ticket (and a poem or pint), email me and tell me (qirsten@gmail.com). it would be good to do this by the end of tomorrow (sunday) so's i can email the nightlight and tell them what's going on. as far as money-ing is concerned, we'll figure that out... no rush.

also, important: please include a two-line rhyme, on the subject of your choosing, with your email. whichever rhyme makes me jig the most shall be the ticket-recipient!

love,
kirsten (this is totally namedropping, but i'm aaron's sister, in case we've met and names have been forgotten)

I've noticed that Vancouver and Seattle (and SF) have tons of postings and events to go to all the time. While I realize we are a smaller city I know there are hundreds if not thousands of us out here who'd like to connect with other great people. So while you are posting on your favorite tribe, post a note here so less connected Hamsters can dial in . ; )

For starters, I know there is a full moon gathering tonight in Alger at Peace Lane. Usually a smaller mellow gathering with a possible sauna. You know who you are if you're invited. Ask a friend!

Mutant Toy Workshop This Wednesday: 12/13 SantaCon is Coming!

SantaCon Bellingham is this coming Friday, 12/15! More details soon.

Especially for Bellinghamsters: You all are invited to come to my house this Wednesday night, 12/13, to a Mutant Toy Workshop. 7pm-10pm.

Not sure what I'm talking about? http://tinyurl.com/y666hk

You bring glue guns, hacksaws, stuffed animals, weird small toys of all kinds, glitter, ribbons, trims of all manner. . .
I've got a big bag of weird toys I bought at the Goodwill buy-trash-by-the-pound store in Seattle in October. They are begging to become weirder and then handed out on Friday night at SantaCon Bellingham.

I'll have a few snacks, but you too can bring munchies and bevvies.

This is the perfect way to participate in SantaCon even if you aren't up for the public fuckery of Santa on Friday. Think of it as a craft circle with a twisted sense of humor. It's a good excuse to get together, make a mess in my kitchen, and have some laughs. We haven't had an all Hamster get together for a while, so puhleeeeeze come over! Especially if I haven't met you yet.

Sorry for the short notice. Santa is lazy this year. Oh, and the above linked SantaHammy website is sorely out of date, except that the dates posted for the various SantaCons are correct. Just no details posted for meet up spots. If you're browsing the site and can't find the details you want please tribe message me and I'll see if I can scare up some information for ya.

If'n you want to come over on Wednesday for Mutant Toys and don't have my coordinates or telephonic digits send me a private message on Tribe. I don't post that info publically, but I DO welcome making new friends.

For a little background I live in a tiny town nestled next to the mountains called Darrington WA, and have been learning about foraging for food.... taking lots of hikes / walks near the river and for years I have watched the salmon life cycle on the Stillaguamish River. I am interested in piecing a story / dance together about fall in the PNW and wanted to fuse some native american dancing / salmon celebration into a piece about the salmon.....
any help you can give is Greatly appreicated! thanx and take care, Indigo

BEAF Part 1

Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival Nov. 30th - Dec. 3rd - Part 1: History & Vision

Hey everyone. Wanted to tell you all about an event I'm helping organize.
The Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival
www.bellinghamelectronicartsfestival.com/

Some History:
BEAF was started by Nicholas Brittain Shaber in 2004 as a means of providing a focal event for the different sorts of electronic music (and arts) happening around Bellingham and the Northwest.

BEAF 2004 was held July 31 at the Pickford Dreamspace, a marathon event with 9 performing acts and 4 installations. Lots of folks helped Nic make it happen, as far as I know all on a volunteer basis. [I won't name everybody.] There was a beer garden, a coffee stand, and other booths from supporting orgs/businesses. Good local coverage and a good crowd.

BEAF 2005 was a wider-ranging two-day event (May 6-7) at the Dreamspace that featured an electropop show Friday night, an international electroacoustic music/video show Saturday afternoon, an experimental & DJ show Saturday evening, and one installation. Again lots of people put in long hours to make it work (esp. Nicholas). Crowds were supportive but not as big as we had hoped for.

Before Nicholas moved to Iceland he and a small group of BEAF-people decided it would be good to operate as a BEAF board, without official membership or titles but with roles based on expertise, and with a commitment to the event and to each other. So we've been meeting frequently to plan BEAF 2006 and it is coming together nicely.

Compared to previous years it's gonna be bigger and better: bigger acts, more days, more venues.

Another change this year is the direct involvement of Western. BEAF is still an independent entity, but we are having some campus events co-sponsored by the College of Fine & Perf. Arts. We are hoping that it makes a healthy town/campus connection, with town-folk and students going to shows in both locations. The Spark festival at the U. of Minnesota and around Minneapolis is a good model for this sort of thing, though much bigger than we're attempting at this point. spark.cla.umn.edu/index2.html

We have also tried to incorporate much that we learned from our friends at the Decibel festival in Seattle, and at many other events of this type (festivals seem to be springing up everywhere). We feel BEAF to be the right fit for our community, and possibly to offer things in a different way than other festivals. As we grow I think we all want to stick with Nicholas' vision, which seemed to be about building community and maintaining a support network for this sort of art to flourish in our town.

More information to follow in subsequent posts!
Please, please, please go to our web site to learn more about this event! Don't hesitate to contact me with questions. This event is very unique in combining a high calibre of artists, lecturers, and performers with an intimate setting.

Massage and Yellow Aster Butte

They don't necessarily go together but why not? I am continuing my massage sale of $45 for a 90 minute Swedish, Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Massage for Tribe Members in Bellingham. All the info you need is on my page. Tired of wimpy massages? I do the heavy stuff AND the energy work. : )

Secondly, I plan to hike to Yellow Aster Butte, Wednesday, Sept. 27. That's tomorrow at the moment. Anyone wanna pick some blueberries and maybe chanterelles? Friday is an alternate day but weather is probably better on Wednesday.

Does anybody else have to do their recreating on weekdays? Cawl me!

Firedancing (and non-fire too) in B'ham?

Hey all. I'll be in B'ham tomorrow night (Thurs 9.21.06) through Sunday (9.24.06). I'll have my fire gear with me (poi, doubles staff, contact staff) and other non-fire toys as well (meteor, juggling things, rope dart). Anyone know of any fire play during any of those nights? Or howbout general play during the days? Anyone interested in getting together for some spinning?

Let me know.. I'll be on the road tomorrow at around noon.

Peace,
- Sui

I am so sick of my boring job- does anyone here like their job?

I am cornered in my job that I am currently in. It pays too much for me to leave, but too little for the actual position it is. My boss is constantly condescending to me even though I am more educated than he is!
Anyway- I've been here for 3 years and have constantly kept an eye out but there isn't much out there for me. I'm too crafty of a person to be stuck in a boring job forever and my husband will never make enough $$$ for me to do my own thing.

Does anyone in this town actually like their jobs? Or are most of just cornered into something because of financial reasons?
Just curious.

Favorite early summer hiking spots?

What are your favorite places to go hiking in the early summer? (Either near or far.) It's starting to get warmer and I'm stoked to go run around outside, especially in places I've never been before.

Of course I can't ask for a favorite without sharing a favorite: I love Church Mountain, just off of Mt. Baker Hwy. It may not be totally hikable yet because of the elevation, but it's wonderful in the summer.

Olympia, July 26, 2006 -- This morning, the Washington Supreme Court issued a decision in Andersen v. King County, a consolidated case regarding Washington’s Defense of Marriage Act.

The Court’s lead opinion was authored by Justice Barbara Madsen, holding the Washington Defense of Marriage Act does not violate the Washington State Constitution. This decision overturns trial court decisions in King and Thurston Superior Courts in this case.

Signing Justice Madsen’s opinion are Chief Justice Gerry Alexander and Associate Chief Justice Charles W. Johnson. Two members of the Court, Justices James M. Johnson and Richard B. Sanders agreed with the majority in result only, using a separate legal rationale in a concurring opinion authored by Justice James M. Johnson. Chief Justice Gerry Alexander also issued a separate concurrence in this case.

The Court had three dissenting opinions, one authored by Justice Mary E. Fairhurst which was signed by Justices Bobbe J. Bridge, Tom Chambers and Susan J. Owens. Justices Bridge and Chambers also issued separate dissents in this case.

The Court’s opinion including concurrences and dissents is available online at www.courts.wa.gov, along with links to the RealAudio of the oral argument.

Leadership Whatcom

http://leadershipwhatcom.org/main.html

Tonight puts a capstone on a 10 month leadership program I've been part of this year. It was our final meeting and our "graduation". It comes at an exciting time of transition for me with leaving my job/business venture of the last 8 months and making a conscious choice to get back to community work and inhabiting a collaborative teaching and learning environment.

Leadership Whatcom was a one-Friday-a-month learning experience where we practiced self reflection, group process models, negotiation, communication, etc. We heard presentations about aspects of our community from the environment, health, education, and government, to development, social justice, and economy. We met many local leaders doing interesting work, and formed small groups to do community projects. Our group put together a three panel display telling stories from the local working poor to raise awareness of how many people live on the edge and sometimes fall off in our low wage county.

Burning Man has taught me many things, but most especially that I have the ability and the right to participate in creating the kind of place I want to live. When we came back to Whatcom County from Seattle I was determined to learn about the area, connect with people who are making things hum, and to participate in the community at large beyond going to work and buying my groceries.

I refer to where I live as "Whatcom County" rather than just Bellingham, because one of the things that makes this corner of the world unique is that we have a strong county-wide identity. Although this bucolic small-town county seems in some ways very homogenous and very white, I find that I have direct daily access to greater diversity here than I did in Seattle. In the city it's easy to stay within your bubble of like-minded people and never truly hear the perspectives of those who are different than you. Here, we must rub elbows with service and business, farmers and fishermen, technology wizards and troglodytes. It's a smaller place and we share space and resources more intensely. I wanted to hear the stories and perspectives of those who work and live in radically different ways than myself because I want to always be challenging my beliefs and practicing how to get things done with a diverse range of voices at the table.

Leadership Whatcom was an amazing experience. I'm proud to have made it through the program. I am a better citizen because of it, and I made many wonderful friendships and connections along the way. It makes me feel like I'm plugged into the web here, and that I can and will take part in making this a great place to live. The Playa will always be a special home to me, but so is this place that I live every day.

possibly moving to Bellingham - need some help

Hi-

My boyfriend went to WWU and we are thinking about moving to Bellingham so he can finish up his degree. He has about a year or so left to go. We are ultimately planning on moving to Portland so this would be a short detour (we are currently in San Diego).

So - I've never been to Bellingham and I have some reservations. My boyfriend has, but it's been years, and he is in a different place in his life now then he was then. He was a youngster raver burner hoodlum and he liked Bellingham, but I'm worried that it will be a bit too small for me, and having grown up in a college town, I'm a little concerned about moving to a college town again.

Can any of you tell me what you do or don't like about Bellingham?

The "City of Subdued Excitement" thing is pretty funny.

What is it like to live there? Expensive? How much are rentals? How bad is traffic? How are the restaurants? Is there a social scene of any kind for people outside of college age? What kind of "alternative" culture is there in Bellingham? Are there bars where we would feel OK going into at 30+ years of age? Is there any kind of an art scene? Are there any local boutique type stores or is Bellingham more of a strip mall town? Are there any clubs?

Appreciate any help or answers you can provide.

Howdy Folks! My name is Inanna. I just got back from a long journey and am inspired to make being home a new experience this time. I have been working with some folks around town in creating some dream parties to awaken ourselves and realize that we create it. Whatever "it" is. We are performance artists, fire dancers, free thinkers and hard workers. We need more folks for our core group - specifically a costume designer/seamstress as well as others with creative minds and skills. If you are curious - drop me a note.

peace and blessings,
Inanna

A chance to get involved...

Here is a great opportunity to get involved in a really, really, cool local organization. The BFB (soon to be changed to Boogie International?), is a volunteer-run community ART! collective. We're celebrating three years of hosting absolutely kick-ass dance parties, art exhibits, dance & circus performances, and networking community. We're looking to spread the inspiration we've gathered from the Playa & elsewhere to the amazing people that make up our community.

Be sure to sign-up on tribe.net, then join our tribe:
http://tribes.tribe.net/b577a90e-f9b3-40d6-8811-3ba846ded084?r=10688

We're currently planning two events: One smaller, simpler dance party hopefully on November 19th. One large (250-500 people) multi-room, live band, many great dj's (vancouver & Seattle), art & film exhibits, interactive art installments, costumed theme party, on December 3rd.

Weekly meetings will continue at my place at 6:00 p.m. Wednesdays, next one wed. Oct 19th:

2506 Elizabeth St.
Bellingham, WA 98225
(360) 715-3527

This is a great opportunity to get involved with your community and express yourself. Everyone welcome; newcomers highly encouraged.

Here's some info from our last meeting for those that didn't make it and an update on the status of our next events:

The last meeting was great. The returning volunteers & the newcomers seem very excited and motivated to make things bigger and better. There seems to be a universal interest in re-vamping the amount of ART! and participation involved in our events. Steps are being made to carry that vision out though your input and ideas are highly encouraged.

Thanks and see you at the meetings,

Erik

...well shame on me for not thinking to look for you'all sooner...I'm still fairly new to tribe.net.

I'd been in Seattle for 11 plus years, and a recent arrival to Whatcom Cty (2002). And, no I'm not in B'ham exactly, though Sumas is close enough I figure; almost Canadian and Living on the Edge I like to say.

What I'm really after is a place to park a great big (and beautiful) conversion bus I've been working on for a year and a half...basically my current parking situation is due to expire eventually, and I'm trying to line up something more local. Would you have a chunk of land in the county somewhere and a soft spot for schoolbus hippie wanna-be's?

If you're at all curious you can view some picks here:
http://www.seanet.com/users/bronnz/artstuff/buspics.html

I know I'm new on this group, or tribe or what have-you, but thought I'd ask. No worries here...

Cheers, W

CACOPHONY IS AS CACOPHONY DOES

CACOPHONY IS AS CACOPHONY DOES

Vancouver Cacophany is a randomly gathered network of individuals united in the pursuit of experiences beyond the pale of mainstream society through subversion, pranks, art, fringe explorations and meaningless madness.

There are no rules as to how you should proceed. Cacophony grows organically, nurtured by example. If you're getting out of line, your family will let you know. If you don't like it, you can always run home and hide.

Cacophony events usually incorporate performance and some sort of extra push toward absurdity or provocation. These events, whether held in clubs, art spaces, or private homes usually make some attempt to involve the audience interactively, but also leave room for socializing and shadows for skittish wallflowers.

Kamp GFY inspired but not exclusive. All are welcome to join.

Welcome!

Another soon to be immigrant to bham, looking for housing/job opportunities

Here's the scoop, I'm living in Ellensburg, WA right now. I'm part time archaeologist, anthropologist, traveler, smiler, hiker and the such. I'll be up there sometime in mid November'ish and have no idea (other than the newspaper, but I don't like most of those apartments/rooms) how to look for good housing, as in good energy, holistic, loving sort of places, no cookie cutters please, I would like a nook, a good little abode. I don't party or drink but have no problemo with a little relaxation with the alcohol or green friends, pretty mellow. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to moving up there, I've been here in ellensburg for awhile, so it'll be nice to get up there, and start some more school at Western, if anyone speaks Mandinka or French, or Wolof, keep me in tune too! Looking for part time work also, great cook, easy learner, (yeah yeah yeah!)

Is anyone interested in getting together and playing cards on sunday or tuesday or some other less interesting day of the week. Poker is alright, but I would rather spend the five bucks on beer and play spades, or hearts, or 500, court whist, pinnocle... or something more along those lines. Does anyone still play cards anymore?
